The Port of Long Beach constructed the new Hanjin Container Terminal and Intermodal yard in 1997. The site of the intermodal yard was located on property with highly variable ground conditions, part of which had been used for oil extraction. To form appropriate gradients, one end of the yard was located in cut material with the other end on imported fill material. A thin pavement section was considered important so as to keep the pavement above ground water elevations where possible. Nigel Nixon and Partners, Inc. were appointed by the Port, through Holmes and Narver, to undertake the design of the pavement section and subgrade reinforcement.
