The Howland Hook Marine Terminal is being expanded into an area of fill material subject to localized sinkhole problems, with construction scheduled for completion during 2000. The tidal erosion of gypsum results in the creation of sub-surface voids, which will be temporarily bridged by a geogrid reinforced earth capping layer under the pavement. Concrete pavers were chosen as a surfacing to expedite repairs. Nigel Nixon and Partners, Inc. were appointed, through Eres Consultants, to investigate the different pavement options that were compatible with the reinforced earth capping layer and the tight project deadlines requiring winter working.
