The Port of Cork expanded their Tivoli container terminal and upgraded the pavements to accommodate a new fleet of straddle carriers in 1996. The existing pavements had undergone settlement and sections of the paving were in a degraded condition. The extension area was previously used only for light loads. Nigel Nixon and Partners, Inc., were appointed to design an asphalt concrete overlay and new pavement sections to suit the proposed operations and to achieve better drainage profiles. This included the development of plans, details and specifications for the materials, together with limited site observation.
